Pipeline damage is often caused by scouring of the river bed and banks. In rivers and lakes, buried pipelines can be exposed by displacements and floods that wash away the overlying protective material. Maintaining safely covered pipeline crossings is a critical part of pipeline system planning and risk management.
This publication discusses and describes the general technique and procedures for conducting river and sea crossings surveys. The main objective of the survey is to determine the general condition, actual location and depth of coverage of the pipeline along the river crossing and to determine the active corrosion protection. The main feature of the proposed technical inspection of crossings is the use of unmanned, remote-controlled boats equipped with surveying equipment, RTK-GPS system and suitable sensor units.
